Report of the 27th European Veterinary Dental Forum
The 27th European Veterinary Dental Forum was held in the Villa Blanka – Innsbruck, Austria from May 31 –June 2, 2018. The event was organised by the European Veterinary Dental Society (EVDS) together with the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC) and very importantly the Österreichische Gesellschaft für Tierärtztliche Zahnheilkunde Local Organising Committee (LOC). The congress was attended by 446 delegates from 36 countries from all continents and personnel of 20 sponsors.
The Forum commenced on Thursday in the traditional manner with the Study Days organised by EVDC and EVDS. The Study Days took place in the same venue: Villa Blanka. These training sessions would not be possible without the extremely generous support of our equipment sponsors: iM3, Accesia, Acteon, Planmeca Group, Apixia Digital Imaging, Horse Dental Equipment, Pferdefit Dental Zahninstrumente, Dentsply Sirona.
There were 6 morning and 6 afternoon courses that last 3 hours per course. The following topics were covered:
- Root canal debridement
- Root canal obturation
- Piezosurgery applications
- Palatal surgery on cats
- Difficult extractions
- Advanced Orthodontics
- Guided tissue regeneration
- Rodents and Lagomorphs selected dental procedures
- Equine Restorative technique
- Equine Incisors endodontics
- Equine sinus surgery Equine sinus diagnostics
All of these were tutored by Diplomates of the EVDC, AVDC and other specialists in the dental and oral field.
On Thursday evening the welcome reception and the opening of the congress were held at the Kaiserliche Hofburg zu Innsbruck, located in the historic city centre. It was well attended and opened by the president of LOC, Dr. med. vet. Matthias Seewald and LOC member Dr. med. vet. Nina Spyra. Drinks and food were served.
This year there were four parallel streams on Friday and three parallel session and interactive sessions on Saturday. The key note speech was held by Prof. Gilles Dupré. The title of his lecture was: Brachycephalic syndrome-Much more than what you think?. There were lectures in many fields of essentials, intermediate and advanced dentistry, exotics and equine dentistry. On Friday a German Session was organised.
Interactive sessions where provided by Diplomates of EVDC and AVDC. In all, 88 presentations were given during the two days of the main congress with speakers coming from all over the world. This year there were six posters which were well attended by the delegates.
On Friday, after the end of the lectures and the AGM of EVDS, the other tradition of the EVDF, the Gala Dinner, took place in Congress Innsbruck - Dogana. The hall Dogana was once the opera house for princess Claudia de Medici and ballroom of the Viennese court, today it is the location of prime events like gala-diners, balls and exhibitions. The EVDS President, Henriëtte Booij-Vrieling, gave a short speech and the EVDC President, Jerzy Gawor, welcomed the three new EVDC Diplomates. The dinner was kindly sponsored by Hill's and IM3. Later on a band animated delegates to dance.
